Ashtanga Yoga – a challenging Yoga practice

This training course focuses on teaching traditional Ashtanga Yoga on an individual “one- on-one” basis within a group setting (Mysore style), as well the teaching of “Led classes” for beginners and advanced students.

The aim of these trainings is to be able to offer an Ashtanga Yoga practice that corresponds individually to each student, to ensure that everyone learns Ashtanga Yoga in a safe way, regardless of age and previous knowledge. This way of teaching requires a reliable and sound knowledge of Ashtanga Yoga, human Anatomy and Physiology, verbal and nonverbal guidance and support of students, as well as a profound analysis and understanding of Yoga itself with all it’ s aspects.

The advanced training course focuses on: Yoga practice, Zazen – Meditation, Pranayama, Yoga technique, teaching methods, adjustment training, Alignement, Anatomy, Living Anatomy, Yoga Philosophy, basic principles of a healthy and balanced diet, Ashtanga Yoga during pregnancy and after giving birth, the principles of Yin Yoga.

Yoga practice:

  • Bringing forward and supporting your personal practice
  • Practicing the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga
  • Practicing the Intermediate (advanced) Series of Ashtanga Yoga (for attendees who meet the requirements),
  • Developing your own “inner teacher”

Zazen

  • a seated meditation practice that cultivates calmness. Zazen assists and supports the Ashtanga practice by the elevated ability of concentration that it cultivates in the practitioner.

The participation is on your own choice.

Yoga technique:

  • Detailed technique and alignment each Asana.
  • the energetic aspects of the Asana
  • Bandhas, Breath and Drishtis
  • The denominations of the Asanas in Sanskrit and their meaning
  • Adjustment of the practice in cases of pre-existing injuries, especially of the joints and the spine
  • Use of assistive equipment
  • Opening and closing Mantras with detailed translation
  • Yin Yoga

Teaching methods:

  • Adjustments (see below)
  • Verbal corrections
  • Mysore style for beginners and advanced
  • Structure of the Mysore style class
  • Led class in the original count system (Sanskrit)
  • Led class “talk through” Primary Series for Beginners
  • The use of voice and language as teaching tool
  • Hospitation and supervising of the class
  • Feedback on your teaching skills
  • Support of the teacher personality

Adjustment training “the art of touch”:

To give adjustments in a good and safe manner is an art for itself and requires regular practice over many years. Learning how to give safe and helpful adjustments as well as how to “read” the body is an important element of this advanced training course and will be a key area of focus.

  • Technique and practice of different adjustments for each Asana
  • Understanding the “essence of the Asanas” in order to be able to give specific and effective adjustments
  • Recognizing blocked energy and supporting its release
  • Supporting adjustments: Facilitating Asanas through adjustments
  • Correcting adjustments: Enabling the student to perform Asanas in such a way that the energy can flow
  • Intensifying adjustments: Enabling the student to perform Asanas and/or to intensify them
  • Therapeutic adjustments: Giving safe support in cases of pre-existing impairments or injuries

Anatomy:

The anatomy class will be related to practice from the outset. The focus will be on the functional aspects of anatomy – not just relating to the locomotor system but to all systems of the body. That allows a better understanding of the movement mechanisms and movement abilities, since structure and function are always interdependent.

The classes will mediate a sense for the functional principles of the entire organism in order to facilitate the development of an overall understanding of the body.

The class will have a theoretical as well as a practical approach, meaning that through feeling out the structures on a living body, a connection to its practical relevance will be established. Hence the anatomy class will present a firm basis of the adjustment training.

  • anatomic fundamentals and details of the bones, muscles and all related tissues
  • Living Anatomy: to explore the Anatomy at different Bodies

Dietetics: Fundamentals of a healthy and balanced diet that supports the practice of Ahtanga Yoga.

Yoga during menstruation, pregnancy and after giving birth:

Fundamentals of adapting the Yoga practice during pregnancy and afterwards. Learning a sequence suitable for the days of menstruation.
